James J. Harrington, III is the founder and managing member of HARRINGTON LAW, PLC, which has been located in Novi, Michigan since 1988. Mr. Harrington is one of the premier Family Law attorneys – not just in Oakland and Wayne Counties – but throughout the State of Michigan.

Mr. Harrington was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1973, nearly 50 years ago after graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Detroit, and receiving his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School. :

• He has represented clients in Family Law cases since first being admitted to practice.
• His initial legal career also included civil litigation in wide ranging areas, including: Business & Commercial litigation; Employment Law, wrongful discharge, and non-compete agreements; Professional Negligence/malpractice; Catastrophic automobile accidents including wrongful death cases; Premises Liability including catastrophic amputation injuries from escalators; Estate Planning & Wills & Trusts.
• This wide range of civil litigation experience has been invaluable in Family Law cases because of court room trial experience, knowledge of the Court Rules and the Rules of Evidence, and contact with Judges and attorneys through the State of Michigan.
• The specialization in Family Law evolved into 100% of his practice. It also led to Mr. Harrington’s active involvement in the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, his appointment and election to the Family Law Council, governing body of the 2700 members of the Family Law Section, and his holding every Officer position, including Chair of the Family Law Section. He has also presented at 50 or more Seminars over the last 15 years. He has been recognized as a Super Lawyer 2010 to present, and has the highest “AV” rating from Martindale Hubbell for twenty or more years.

He is equally skilled at dealing with a full range of divorces, which might involve an “amicable” & “friendly” case with minimum attorney involvement — or, appearing as “lead attorney” or as “primary co-Counsel” in a major conflict, high asset, business valuation, or a contested custody case which appears headed to a certain Trial.

He is an active, full time practicing member of the Michigan Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He is a lawyer’s lawyer to whom other attorneys refer cases. Over 50% of his major cases are attorney referrals or involve co-counsel partnering on behalf of client. Mr. Harrington has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Family Law Section, State Bar of Michigan. He was admitted to the Hall of Fame – Family Law, by Michigan Lawyers Weekly in 2021.
